Milan to La Spezia

DAY 2: To La Spezia!

We're off by speed train this morning - from Zurich HB to Milan Stazione Centrale - in 3.5 hours. We'll meet up with Brenna there (she's flying from Munich) and we'll pick up our rental car and drive over the mountains to La Spezia (where we'll meet Nicole).

Driving is pretty easy (though a little traffic-y on the A-1/51 from Milan until turning south, near Parma). Beautiful, fast interstate (“autostrata”). The mountains and mount pass we drove over were stunning and I’m looking forward to coming back and hiking them (part of the via Francigena long distance trail from France To Rome). It’s waaaay more mountain wilderness hiking than the Camino de Santiago (Spain) for sure (at least on this section).

We checked into our 3-room (Airbnb) apartment on Ricciardi Street and walked the city dock- promenade in the evening to a great local seafood place (recommended by the Airbnb host), “di pescadores”. Really good a la carte baked fish, linguine with shellfish, and Mike ordered mussels and anchovies and shared them...so delicious!

The promenade at La Spezia.  Ricciardi House was about a 10-minute walk.

Our little panda ("clown car"): Brenna, Mike, Sara, Nicole and Kristi

We picked up Nicole early the next morning. Only 20-minute drive to our place 4k from Riomaggiore!
